Template for Great Gatsby Argument Essay
The prompt is any one of our seminar topics or any aspect of them. That is, if there is a related topic to our seminar topics that you would like to explore, please ask me. You must use rhetorical sentences/techniques to make your point. In the entire piece, there must be three underlined in the essay and analyzed separately at the end of the essay. 12 font, 1.5 or less spacing, three pages. This is due for peer edit (printed out and brought to class) on February 12th and to turnitin.com by February 21st, midnight. Strong Claim/Thesis that clearly takes a side: active verbs, juicy adjectives and provocative nouns.
Definition of key terms:
These should NOT be dictionary definitions but your own explanation of vague but important terms: noble, justice, love, saint, sacrifice, tragedy, etc. Premise (reason) #1 that supports the claim: Specific, detailed examples from The Great Gatsby: Connection to Audience: (Why would this reason matter to the reader and the world at large?) Premise (reason) #2: Specific, detailed examples from The Great Gatsby: Connection to Audience: (Why would this reason matter to the reader and the world at large?) Premise (reason) #3: Specific, detailed examples from The Great Gatsby: Connection to Audience: (Why would this reason matter to the reader and the world at large?) Counterargument: Turn against. Validate that another opinion exists and has merits. Counter/counterargument: Turn back. Although this other opinion has its points, it is ultimately incorrect because (it is a limited view, it is comparing two unlike things, it fails to consider, to the world at large it is not as significant, etc.) The original opinion is better because…. Conclusion and Call to Action: What rhetorical device will you use and where? Why will this device be effective in supporting your meaning?
